Formula and methodology
Formula: Chain length in pitches ≈ 2C+(F+R)/4+(F−R)²/(4π²C).
The estimate combines the two straight chain runs with the tooth-count contribution around the sprockets.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Center distance — chain pitches; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Front sprocket teeth — minimum 1; maximum 1000
- Rear sprocket teeth — minimum 1; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Center distance | 40 |
| Front sprocket teeth | 50 |
| Rear sprocket teeth | 20 |
Estimate ≈ 98.07 pitches; suggested even link count = 100.
Assumptions and limits
- Center distance is expressed in chain pitches and tooth counts are positive whole numbers.
- The drivetrain is represented by two circular sprockets in one plane.
- Derailleur capacity, chain wear, half-link choice, frame geometry, and manufacturer fit are not modeled.
