Formula and methodology
Formula: CHA₂DS₂-VASc = heart failure/dysfunction (1) + hypertension (1) + age ≥75 (2) or age 65–74 (1) + diabetes (1) + prior stroke/TIA/thromboembolism (2) + vascular disease (1) + female sex category (1). Maximum 9 points.
The calculator adds the components of the CHA₂DS₂-VASc scheme and keeps the age, stroke-history, and sex-category contributions explicit. It is a risk-stratification worksheet commonly used in atrial-fibrillation care, not a diagnosis or treatment order.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Age — years; minimum 18; maximum 120
- Sex category used by the score — 2 choices
- Heart failure or left-ventricular dysfunction documented — 2 choices
- Hypertension documented — 2 choices
- Diabetes mellitus documented — 2 choices
- Previous stroke, TIA, or thromboembolism — 2 choices
- Vascular disease documented — 2 choices
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Age | 55 |
| Sex category used by the score | male |
| Heart failure or left-ventricular dysfunction documented | no |
| Hypertension documented | no |
| Diabetes mellitus documented | no |
| Previous stroke, TIA, or thromboembolism | no |
| Vascular disease documented | no |
CHA₂DS₂-VASc = 0 points for the supplied example inputs.
Assumptions and limits
- The score is being considered in the clinical population and indication for which the chosen version is appropriate, commonly atrial fibrillation.
- Age contributes two points at 75 years or older, one point at 65–74, and zero below 65.
- A previous stroke, TIA, or systemic thromboembolism contributes two points.
- The vascular-disease component follows the documented clinical definition used by the local pathway.
- Female sex category is displayed as a score component; its meaning is interpreted with the rest of the risk profile and current guidance.
- The score does not diagnose atrial fibrillation, heart failure, hypertension, diabetes, stroke, or vascular disease.
- The result does not calculate an exact personal annual risk and does not select anticoagulant, antiplatelet, or dose.
- A clinician must reconcile the score with bleeding risk, comorbidities, preferences, contraindications, and current guidance before treatment decisions.
