Formula and methodology
Formula: Decimal cat age = completed years + additional months ÷ 12. Human-equivalent estimate = 15 × age for ages up to 1; 15 + 9 × (age − 1) from 1 to 2; and 24 + 4 × (age − 2) after age 2. The age band is reported separately as a communication convention.
The staged scale reflects rapid early feline development and slower later changes, but it is an approximate comparison rather than a biological clock, health assessment, or lifespan prediction.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Completed cat years — years; minimum 0; maximum 40
- Additional completed months — months; minimum 0; maximum 11
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Completed cat years | 4 |
| Additional completed months | 0 |
A 4-year-old cat is about 32 human-equivalent years under this staged convention and falls in the adult age band.
Assumptions and limits
- Completed years and additional months describe the same cat age and months are less than 12.
- The decimal age is used to interpolate within each staged interval for month-level planning.
- The first year is represented as about 15 human-equivalent years.
- The second year adds about 9 human-equivalent years, reaching about 24 at age two.
- Each year after the second adds about 4 human-equivalent years in this convention.
- The age band is a communication label and is not a diagnosis or a treatment threshold.
- Breed, nutrition, environment, genetics, disease, body condition, and veterinary findings are not modeled.
- A known birth date is more useful than an estimated age from appearance or adoption records.
- Fractional months are not inferred; enter completed months as a whole number.
- A veterinarian should assess health changes instead of relying on an age-conversion number.
