Formula and methodology
Formula: Net monthly burn = monthlyExpenses - monthlyRevenue; runway in months = cashBalance / net burn when net burn > 0. If burn <= 0, there is no finite depletion time in this model.
Runway is based on net cash burn, not gross spending or accounting profit. If receipts cover expenses, the result states that cash is not depleting under the entered assumptions instead of returning infinity. This does not guarantee that cash is available when individual bills fall due.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Available unrestricted cash — minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Monthly cash expenses — Cash actually paid, rather than noncash accounting expenses.; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Monthly cash receipts — Cash actually received, not merely invoiced revenue.; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Available unrestricted cash | 120000 |
| Monthly cash expenses | 35000 |
| Monthly cash receipts | 10000 |
Cash runway: 4.80 months; net monthly cash burn: 25000.00.
Assumptions and limits
- Cash receipts and expenses remain constant and are treated as evenly distributed over each month; accounting accruals are not cash.
- The starting balance is unrestricted and available, with no future funding, debt changes, seasonality, or one-time cash movements modeled.
- Use one consistent currency. Zero or negative net burn means no finite depletion time under this model, not unlimited liquidity or business viability.
