Formula and methodology
Formula: t = (vᵧ + √(vᵧ² + 2gh))/g; range = vₓt; impact speed = √(vₓ² + (vᵧ − gt)²).
The elevated launch model keeps horizontal velocity constant while gravity determines when the trajectory reaches the landing level. Unlike a level-ground range formula, the positive quadratic-time solution includes the starting height.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Launch speed — m/s; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10000
- Ramp launch angle — °; minimum 0; maximum 89.9
- Launch height above landing level — m; minimum 0; maximum 100000
- Gravitational acceleration — m/s²; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Launch speed | 20 |
| Ramp launch angle | 15 |
| Launch height above landing level | 1 |
| Gravitational acceleration | 9.80665 |
About 1.11 s flight time, 21.44 m horizontal distance, and 19.31 m/s impact speed
Assumptions and limits
- The vehicle is represented by a point projectile with the entered launch speed, angle, and height.
- Air resistance, rolling rotation, suspension motion, terrain slope, landing deformation, and vehicle safety are not modeled.
- The landing level is horizontal and the entered gravity remains constant over the flight.
