Formula and methodology
Formula: spacingFt = spacingIn / 12; square footprint = spacingFt^2; usable bed area = bedLengthFt x bedWidthFt; estimated bulbs = ceiling(usable bed area / square footprint).
This is an explicit square-grid area-ratio estimate for a rectangular bed. It converts center-to-center spacing from inches to feet, divides the rectangular area by one square footprint, and applies a safe finite whole-unit ceiling. Borders, irregular layouts, paths, species-specific horticulture, and planting-layout design are not modeled.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Bed length — ft; Must be positive.; minimum 0.01; maximum 1000000
- Bed width — ft; Must be positive.; minimum 0.01; maximum 1000000
- Center-to-center spacing — in; Must be positive.; minimum 0.25; maximum 120
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Bed length | 20 |
| Bed width | 10 |
| Center-to-center spacing | 12 |
A 20 ft by 10 ft bed has 200 ft^2, and 12 inch spacing gives an estimated 200 bulbs under the square-grid assumption.
Assumptions and limits
- The bed is represented by a rectangle and the same center-to-center spacing applies in both directions.
- Each bulb is assigned a square footprint with side length equal to the converted spacing, with no separate border deduction or edge-placement rule.
- The result is a geometric count estimate only and does not choose a planting design or account for species-specific horticultural practice.
