Formula and methodology
Formula: Heuristic BTU/hour = area x 20 x ceiling/8 x insulation factor x climate factor + 600 per occupant.
A real equipment load needs more building data; this tool labels the result as a transparent room-sizing heuristic.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Room area — square feet; minimum 1; maximum 100000
- Ceiling height — feet; minimum 4; maximum 30
- Regular occupants — minimum 0; maximum 100
- Insulation — 3 choices
- Climate adjustment — 3 choices
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Room area | 300 |
| Ceiling height | 8 |
| Regular occupants | 2 |
| Insulation | average |
| Climate adjustment | mild |
A 300 square foot average-insulation room returns a transparent BTU/hour heuristic.
Assumptions and limits
- Insulation factors are good 20, average 25, and poor 30 BTU per square foot before other adjustments.
- This is not a Manual J load calculation or equipment recommendation.
