Formula and methodology
Formula: Seconds per beat = 60/BPM; milliseconds per beat = 60,000/BPM; duration = beats×60/BPM.
BPM is a rate. Dividing one minute by the number of beats in that minute gives the interval between beats, which can then be multiplied by a bar or phrase length.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Tempo — beats/min; minimum 0.001; maximum 1000000
- Number of beats — beats; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Tempo | 120 |
| Number of beats | 4 |
At 120 BPM each beat lasts 0.5 seconds and four beats last 2 seconds.
Assumptions and limits
- The tempo is constant for the selected interval.
- A beat is treated as one unit; meter, swing, and note subdivision are not inferred.
- Zero or negative tempos are not meaningful for this conversion.
