Formula and methodology
Formula: Resting energy (kcal/day) = 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) - 5 x age (years) + s; s = +5 for the male study coefficient or -161 for the female study coefficient.
Mifflin-St Jeor predicts resting energy expenditure from basic measurements. It is often used as a BMR proxy, but basal and resting metabolic measurements use different conditions. This result omits activity and is neither a minimum calorie intake nor an individual nutrition prescription.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Age — years; The original Mifflin study included adults age 19-78.; minimum 19; maximum 78
- Sex coefficient in the published equation — Study coefficients are not a complete representation of every individual's physiology.; 2 choices
- Weight — kg; minimum 25; maximum 350
- Height — cm; minimum 120; maximum 230
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Age | 32 |
| Sex coefficient in the published equation | male |
| Weight | 76 |
| Height | 178 |
Estimated resting energy (BMR proxy): 1717.50 kcal/day.
Assumptions and limits
- For adults age 19-78 only, matching the original study's age range; not intended for pregnancy, breastfeeding, children, or clinical nutrition decisions.
- The published male and female coefficients are population estimates and may not fit individual physiology; this is not a measured metabolic rate or diagnostic result.
- Kilograms, centimeters, and years are used. No activity multiplier, weight-loss deficit, treatment plan, or prescribed calorie intake is included.
