Formula and methodology
Formula: BMI = weight (kg) / (height (cm) / 100)^2. Adult categories: below 18.5, 18.5 to below 25, 25 to below 30, and 30 or above.
BMI relates total body weight to height. The category is assigned using the unrounded result so display rounding does not move the screening threshold. BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat and should be considered alongside other information by a qualified health professional.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Age — years; CDC adult cutoffs start at age 20; younger people require age-specific assessment.; minimum 20; maximum 100
- Weight — kg; minimum 25; maximum 350
- Height — cm; minimum 120; maximum 230
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Age | 32 |
| Weight | 76 |
| Height | 178 |
BMI: 23.99 kg/m^2; CDC adult screening category: Healthy weight.
Assumptions and limits
- CDC adult screening cutoffs apply only at age 20 and older; the age field enforces this scope but does not alter the BMI equation.
- The measurement is not a diagnosis, individual health verdict, or direct body-fat estimate; muscularity and other individual factors affect interpretation.
- Use measured kilograms and centimeters. Pregnancy requires a different clinical context and this tool does not prescribe treatment or weight change.
