Formula and methodology
Formula: Estimated bladder volume (mL) = length (cm) × width (cm) × height (cm) × correction factor. Since 1 cm³ equals 1 mL, the dimension product is displayed in cm³ and mL.
Ultrasound bladder estimates commonly model the organ as an ellipsoid. The calculator lets the user state which correction factor is being used rather than hiding a protocol choice, then reports the same estimate in millilitres and litres.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.

Assumptions and limits
- The three dimensions are maximum perpendicular measurements from the ultrasound method being used.
- The selected factor is an approximation and may differ by equipment, protocol, bladder shape, and operator.
- Centimetres are used for every dimension, so the cubic-centimetre result is numerically equivalent to millilitres.
- The bladder is treated as approximately ellipsoidal even though real shape can be irregular.
- The calculator does not decide whether a scan is pre-void, post-void, or clinically adequate.
- It does not diagnose urinary retention, obstruction, infection, neurogenic bladder, or another cause.
- A residual measurement should be timed and interpreted using the local protocol and the person’s symptoms.
- A painful inability to urinate or severe lower abdominal symptoms need urgent local medical assessment.
