Formula and methodology
Formula: Approximate open-belt length L = 2C + π(D+d)/2 + (D−d)²/(4C).
The relation estimates the two straight belt runs and the wrapped portions around pulleys of different diameters.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Large pulley diameter — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Small pulley diameter — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Pulley center distance — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Large pulley diameter | 200 |
| Small pulley diameter | 100 |
| Pulley center distance | 500 |
Approximate belt length ≈ 1,476.238 mm.
Assumptions and limits
- Diameters and center distance use millimetres and the center distance is positive.
- The belt is an open, flexible belt with sufficiently large center distance.
- Tension adjustment, belt thickness, tooth pitch, slip, pulley alignment, and manufacturer tolerances are not modeled.
