Formula and methodology
Formula: Count = ceil((opening length + maximum gap)/(baluster width + maximum gap)); actual equal gap = (opening length − count × baluster width)/(count−1).
The estimate counts equal-width balusters and then reports the clear gap produced when they are distributed across the opening.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Opening length — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Baluster width — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Maximum clear gap — length units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Opening length | 120 |
| Baluster width | 4 |
| Maximum clear gap | 10 |
Balusters = 10; equal clear gap ≈ 8.889 length units.
Assumptions and limits
- All dimensions use one unit and the opening is straight.
- The maximum-gap rule is a planning input, not a universal building-code value.
- End returns, handrail geometry, stairs, structural attachment, and local safety rules are not modeled.
