Formula and methodology
Formula: The ordinary mean is (p₁+…+pₙ)/n; the sample-size-weighted mean is (p₁w₁+…+pₙwₙ)/(w₁+…+wₙ).
A plain average treats every entered percentage as one equally sized group. The weighted result instead gives each percentage the influence of the number of observations it represents, which is often the meaningful answer for grouped survey, test, or conversion data.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Percentages — Enter 2–10 percentage values, separated by commas or spaces.
- Matching sample sizes — Enter one positive whole-number weight for each percentage.
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Percentages | 80, 40 |
| Matching sample sizes | 4, 1 |
The ordinary mean is 60%; the sample-size-weighted mean is 72%.
Assumptions and limits
- Percentages are entered as percentage points such as 80 for 80%, not decimals such as 0.80.
- Every weight is a positive whole-number count and matches one percentage in order.
- The result describes the entered groups; it does not audit how the percentages or sample sizes were collected.
