Formula and methodology
Formula: Atom economy = desired product molar mass / total reactant molar mass x 100.
Atom economy is a theoretical reaction-design metric. It asks how much of the stoichiometric reactant mass appears in the desired product and does not replace the measured yield, solvent assessment, energy analysis, or waste audit.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Desired product molar mass — g/mol; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Total reactant molar mass — g/mol; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Desired product molar mass | 18 |
| Total reactant molar mass | 58.5 |
Atom economy is 30.7692%.
Assumptions and limits
- Molar masses represent the balanced reaction stoichiometry.
- The desired product mass and total reactant mass use the same molar-mass unit.
- The desired product molar mass cannot exceed the total stoichiometric reactant molar mass in this simplified contract.
