Formula and methodology
Formula: AST/ALT ratio = AST activity ÷ ALT activity.
This page performs the direct AST-to-ALT division and exposes the enzyme difference and component shares as supporting arithmetic. It does not attach a diagnosis or universal threshold to the ratio because assay reference intervals and clinical contexts differ.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- AST activity — activity units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- ALT activity — activity units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| AST activity | 80 |
| ALT activity | 40 |
AST/ALT = 80÷40 = 2; AST is 66.67% and ALT is 33.33% of the combined entered activity.
Assumptions and limits
- AST and ALT use comparable activity units from the same intended laboratory context.
- ALT is positive because it is the denominator.
- The difference and share outputs are descriptive arithmetic, not clinical categories.
- The calculator does not adjust for sex, age, medications, timing, or laboratory method.
- A ratio alone cannot identify a liver or muscle condition.
- A clinician should interpret laboratory results with symptoms and the full panel.
