Formula and methodology
Formula: Bottom hydrostatic pressure p = water density × gravity × water depth. Allowable stress = glass reference strength ÷ safety factor. Simplified required thickness t = water depth × √(β × p ÷ allowable stress). The plate coefficient represents support and aspect-ratio assumptions and must be chosen for the actual panel model.
This is a transparent preliminary screen for a rectangular water-loaded panel. It exposes the pressure, allowable stress, and plate coefficient instead of presenting one universal aquarium thickness. It is not a structural approval, glass specification, or guarantee against failure.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Water depth — cm; minimum 1; maximum 300
- Plate-shape coefficient β — dimensionless; minimum 0.01; maximum 5
- Glass reference strength — MPa; minimum 0.1; maximum 500
- Safety factor — ×; minimum 1; maximum 20
- Water density — kg/m³; minimum 900; maximum 1300
- Gravitational acceleration — m/s²; minimum 9; maximum 10
- Existing glass thickness (optional) — mm; minimum 0; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Water depth | 50 |
| Plate-shape coefficient β | 0.5 |
| Glass reference strength | 19.2 |
| Safety factor | 3.8 |
| Water density | 998 |
| Gravitational acceleration | 9.80665 |
| Existing glass thickness (optional) | 0 |
A 0.50 m water column produces about 4.89 kPa at the bottom. Under β = 0.5 and an allowable stress of 5.05 MPa, the simplified required thickness is about 15.6 mm; this is only a screening result.
Assumptions and limits
- Water depth is converted from centimetres to metres before the stress calculation.
- Hydrostatic pressure is treated as increasing linearly with depth and reported at the bottom.
- The plate coefficient β is supplied for the panel support and aspect-ratio model.
- The strength value is a reference tensile strength, not a certified design value for a specific pane.
- The safety factor divides the reference strength to create a simplified allowable stress.
- The screen treats the pane as a thin plate under water pressure and omits detailed edge, silicone, and frame behavior.
- Glass type, defects, drilling, seams, bracing, impact, thermal effects, and installation quality are not modeled.
- The optional existing thickness check applies the same simplified equation in reverse.
- Water, gravel, rock, lids, transport, and accidental loads may impose additional demands.
- A qualified engineer or tank manufacturer must review any build, repair, or public installation.
