Formula and methodology
Formula: Anion gap = sodium − (chloride + bicarbonate), excluding potassium.
This page calculates the standard potassium-excluded form of the anion gap. It shows the measured chloride-plus-bicarbonate sum and a simple percentage view of the entered sodium so the arithmetic can be audited. It does not adjust for albumin or interpret an acid–base disorder.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Serum sodium — mEq/L; minimum 1; maximum 300
- Serum chloride — mEq/L; minimum 0; maximum 300
- Serum bicarbonate — mEq/L; minimum 0; maximum 300
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Serum sodium | 140 |
| Serum chloride | 104 |
| Serum bicarbonate | 24 |
Chloride plus bicarbonate is 128 mEq/L, so the potassium-excluded anion gap is 12 mEq/L.
Assumptions and limits
- All electrolyte values use the same mEq/L convention and laboratory time point.
- The formula excludes potassium, matching the contract shown on this page.
- Bicarbonate is used as the entered laboratory value without substituting another measurement.
- The percentage output is a mathematical display and is not a clinical reference range.
- Albumin correction, delta-gap analysis, compensation formulas, and diagnosis are excluded.
- Laboratory reference intervals and clinical meaning must be supplied by a qualified professional.
