Formula and methodology
Formula: Overall speedup = 1/[(1−p) + p/s]; accelerated runtime = original runtime/overall speedup; ideal maximum speedup = 1/(1−p).
Amdahl's law keeps the non-accelerated portion visible. Even a very large improvement to the parallel portion has a finite effect when some work remains serial.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Fraction that can be accelerated — fraction; minimum 0; maximum 0.999999
- Speedup of the accelerated part — ×; minimum 1; maximum 1000000
- Original runtime — seconds; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Fraction that can be accelerated | 0.9 |
| Speedup of the accelerated part | 8 |
| Original runtime | 3600 |
Overall speedup ≈ 4.706× and a 3,600-second job takes about 765 seconds.
Assumptions and limits
- The parallel fraction p describes original runtime, not a fraction of processor count.
- The accelerated portion has one constant speedup s and communication, scheduling, and memory costs are not modeled separately.
- The parallel fraction is capped just below one so the ideal maximum remains finite and displayable.
