Formula and methodology
Formula: Low mass = total mass (high - target)/(high - low); high mass = total mass (target - low)/(high - low).
Alligation is a weighted-mixture shortcut. It works when the target concentration lies strictly between the two source concentrations and both source materials are measured on the same basis.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Low concentration — %; minimum 0; maximum 100
- High concentration — %; minimum 0; maximum 100
- Target concentration — %; minimum 0; maximum 100
- Total mixture mass — mass units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Low concentration | 10 |
| High concentration | 40 |
| Target concentration | 25 |
| Total mixture mass | 10 |
Use 5 mass units of each source; the low-to-high ratio is 1:1.
Assumptions and limits
- The two concentrations use the same percentage basis and the same mass unit.
- The target lies strictly between the low and high concentrations.
- The mixture is additive and no volume contraction, reaction, evaporation, or loss is modeled.
