Formula: N = R★ fₚ nₑ fₗ fᵢ f꜀ L, where N is the estimated number of detectable civilizations in the Milky Way.
The Drake equation is a framework for multiplying a star-formation rate, planetary factors, biological fractions, communication capability, and detectable lifetime. The output is a scenario estimate, not an observation or a probability that a particular planet contains life.
