Formula and methodology
Formula: Total seconds = 3,600 × (hours A + hours B) + 60 × (minutes A + minutes B) + seconds A + seconds B.
This duration calculator adds two independent spans of time and then normalizes the result. It does not interpret a start time, time zone, daylight-saving rule, or calendar date.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- First duration hours — hours; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- First duration minutes — minutes; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- First duration seconds — seconds; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- Second duration hours — hours; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- Second duration minutes — minutes; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- Second duration seconds — seconds; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| First duration hours | 2 |
| First duration minutes | 35 |
| First duration seconds | 40 |
| Second duration hours | 1 |
| Second duration minutes | 40 |
| Second duration seconds | 35 |
Total = 4 hours, 16 minutes, 15 seconds (15,375 seconds).
Assumptions and limits
- Each group is a duration, not a clock reading.
- All components are nonnegative and may exceed their usual display ranges before normalization.
- One day is treated as exactly 24 hours for duration arithmetic.
- Calendar dates, leap seconds, time zones, and daylight-saving transitions are outside this page.
