Formula and methodology
Formula: Percent yield = actual yield ÷ theoretical yield × 100; yield difference = theoretical yield − actual yield; recovery ratio = actual yield ÷ theoretical yield.
The theoretical yield is the maximum predicted by the balanced reaction and limiting-reactant calculation; the actual yield is the product recovered by the experiment. The page keeps those upstream values as inputs and does not pretend to balance a reaction or identify a limiting reagent from masses alone.

Assumptions and limits
- Both masses describe the same pure product and use grams or another consistent mass unit.
- The theoretical yield is positive and already reflects the selected balanced reaction and limiting reactant.
- Actual yield may be below, equal to, or above the theoretical value so an unusual result remains visible rather than silently clipped.
- A result above 100% can indicate moisture, impurities, measurement error, or an incorrect theoretical basis and is not proof of impossible chemistry.
- The calculation does not balance equations, determine limiting reagents, correct purity, or model side reactions.
- Drying, filtration, transfer loss, weighing uncertainty, and product identity require laboratory controls.
- Use appropriate laboratory supervision, safety procedures, and waste handling for the actual experiment.
