Formula and methodology
Formula: ABI = ankle systolic pressure ÷ the higher entered brachial systolic pressure.
This worksheet makes the denominator choice explicit by comparing the two entered arm pressures and using the higher value. It returns the ratio, the selected denominator, and transparent pressure differences so the visitor can review the arithmetic without receiving a hidden clinical classification.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Ankle systolic pressure — mmHg; minimum 1; maximum 500
- Right brachial systolic pressure — mmHg; minimum 1; maximum 500
- Left brachial systolic pressure — mmHg; minimum 1; maximum 500
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Ankle systolic pressure | 100 |
| Right brachial systolic pressure | 120 |
| Left brachial systolic pressure | 115 |
The higher brachial pressure is 120 mmHg, so ABI = 100 ÷ 120 = 0.8333.
Assumptions and limits
- All three pressures are systolic measurements in mmHg from a comparable measurement session.
- The higher of the two entered brachial pressures is used as the denominator.
- The ankle value represents the ankle pressure the visitor intends to compare.
- The calculator does not validate Doppler technique, cuff size, limb selection, or repeated measurements.
- No diagnostic threshold or treatment recommendation is generated.
- A health professional must interpret the result with symptoms, history, and the measurement method.
