Formula and methodology
Formula: Housing ratio = housing cost ÷ gross income; total ratio = (housing cost + other debt) ÷ gross income. Compare them with 28% and 36% planning thresholds.
This page separates a housing-cost ratio from a combined debt ratio so a visitor can see which part of a budget is driving the result. The percentages are benchmarks used in some lending and budgeting contexts, not a worldwide lending law or an approval promise.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Monthly gross income — currency/month; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000000
- Monthly housing cost — currency/month; Include the housing payment and recurring housing costs you want to compare.; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Other monthly debt payments — currency/month; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Monthly gross income | 6000 |
| Monthly housing cost | 1500 |
| Other monthly debt payments | 400 |
Housing ratio = 25%; total debt ratio = 31.6667%; both are below the entered 28% and 36% benchmarks.
Assumptions and limits
- Income and all payments cover the same month and use one currency.
- Housing cost contains the recurring items the visitor wants to include, rather than an automatically guessed local tax or insurance amount.
- The 28% and 36% thresholds are planning references; lenders, landlords, countries, and households may use different rules.
- The result does not assess credit history, reserves, dependents, irregular income, or legal eligibility.
