Customer lifetime value can sound like a prediction about everything a customer will ever do, but this simple calculator is narrower and easier to inspect. It multiplies annual contribution margin per customer by relationship length in years. If the annual margin is 1,200 and the relationship length is 4 years, the result is 4,800 in the same currency. The result is undiscounted: it treats each modeled year's margin as equal in value regardless of when it arrives. It also leaves acquisition cost, changing churn, changing margins, and fixed overhead outside the calculation. Use it as a transparent starting point for comparing clearly labeled scenarios, checking a unit-economics assumption, or explaining why retention matters. It is not a forecast and it is not a valuation decision. Do not present it as an accounting measure or a stand-alone decision about how much to spend to acquire or retain a customer. The calculation has two inputs and one multiplication. Annual margin per customer is the contribution margin that one customer is expected to create in a typical year after the variable costs of serving that customer. Relationship length is the number of years used to represent how long that customer remains in the defined relationship. The product is a total contribution-margin amount for the modeled relationship, not a total sales amount and not a cash balance.
The word expected needs care. You may enter an observed average from a completed cohort, a planning assumption, or a scenario chosen to test a question. The calculator cannot tell which of those you supplied. It does not observe customers, learn a retention curve, or know whether the relationship length is realistic. The number is only as defensible as the definitions and evidence behind the two inputs.
The word simple is also important. The model treats annual contribution margin as constant across the relationship and compresses all retention behavior into one duration. A customer who contributes 900 in each of three years and a customer whose margin rises and falls across three years both produce 2,700 if the same annual average and duration are entered. The tool is useful because that compression is visible, not because it captures every commercial detail.
Read the result with its labels attached. A result of 4,800 means 4,800 units of the input currency in undiscounted contribution margin under the stated annual-margin and duration assumptions. It does not mean the business will collect exactly 4,800, that the customer will behave normally, or that the business should pay any particular acquisition cost. The result should start a review of assumptions rather than end one.
Revenue is what the customer pays or what the business records as sales before subtracting the costs that vary with serving that customer. Contribution margin is the amount left after those variable costs. That remainder contributes toward fixed costs and profit. Because the calculator asks for annual margin rather than annual revenue, entering the customer's billings directly can substantially overstate the modeled value.
Imagine a subscription that produces 1,800 of annual revenue. Suppose payment fees, usage charges, fulfillment, customer-specific materials, and other genuinely variable service costs total 900. The annual contribution margin is 900, not 1,800. Over three years, the simple model gives 2,700 when 900 is entered. Using revenue instead would produce 5,400, which silently assumes that none of the variable service costs exist.
Contribution margin is also not the same as a contribution-margin percentage. A margin percentage of 40 percent describes the share of revenue that remains after variable costs. The calculator field is an amount per customer per year, so a 40 percent ratio must first be applied to the relevant annual revenue. If annual revenue is 1,800 and the contribution-margin ratio is 40 percent, the annual dollar margin is 720. Entering 40 as if it were 40 currency units would be a different and usually nonsensical scenario.
Do not call the result net profit unless the input has been deliberately defined that way for a separate analysis. Fixed salaries, general software, rent, management time, taxes, financing costs, and other shared expenses may not be included in contribution margin. Whether a cost is variable depends on the service and accounting convention. Write down the rule used to decide which costs belong in annual margin, and apply it the same way to every customer or cohort you compare.
Use net revenue when appropriate. Refunds, credits, discounts, chargebacks, and taxes collected on behalf of someone else may need to be removed before calculating the amount that is actually available to cover variable service costs. The calculator has no fields to make those decisions. It is better to normalize the annual margin outside the page and enter one defensible dollar amount than to mix gross sales for one group with net contribution for another.
Start by choosing the unit of customer that the annual amount describes. For a subscription business, it might be one paying account. For a marketplace, it might be one buyer or one seller. For a service contract, it might be one signed organization, location, or active seat. The unit must be stated before costs are assigned, because a payment fee per transaction and a support cost per account cannot be combined coherently until the customer unit and activity level are known.
Next choose a period and normalize the margin to one year. If the source figure is monthly, multiply it by the number of months represented only when the relationship and activity are reasonably comparable across the year. If the customer is seasonal, an annual total divided by twelve may be a useful average for this simple model, but it hides the timing of the busy and quiet periods. Keep the original seasonal values available for a richer cash-flow review.
List variable costs that increase because this customer is served. Depending on the business, these could include transaction fees, usage-based infrastructure, shipping, materials, commissions, support time paid per contact, or fulfillment labor that scales with orders. Exclude shared fixed costs only if your chosen contribution-margin definition excludes them. A cost can be fixed for one horizon and variable for another, so record the horizon and purpose of the analysis instead of treating the label as universal.
If customers have distinct plans or service patterns, calculate a separate annual margin for each meaningful group. A premium account with heavy usage should not be averaged into a low-usage account just because both have the same account label. An average can be appropriate for a clearly defined cohort, but it should be a weighted average that reflects the mix of customers and the activity period being studied.
The field accepts a nonnegative number. If serving a customer produces a negative contribution margin, entering zero would hide the loss and entering a positive number would reverse its meaning. That situation needs a different treatment, such as a loss-aware scenario or a separate cost review. Do not use the simple page to make an unprofitable customer look neutral.
Relationship length is the duration assigned to the customer definition you selected. For a subscription, it may mean the time from becoming a paying customer until cancellation. For a repeat-purchase business, it may mean the active period over which the customer continues to buy under the rule you have chosen. For a contract business, it may be the expected number of years of renewal. It is not automatically the age of an account, the age of a person, or the time since a first website visit.
The input can be fractional. A value of 2.5 means two and a half modeled years, so an annual margin of 800 produces 2,000 before any other adjustment. Fractional years are a compact approximation, not proof that margin arrives evenly every day. If contracts renew on a fixed annual date or cash is concentrated at purchase, the timing convention should be stated outside the result.
A duration can be measured from historical behavior or chosen as a scenario. An observed average may be distorted by customers that are still active, by recent cohorts that have not had time to leave, or by a changing product. A planning duration may be useful for a what-if comparison but should be labeled as an assumption. The calculator has no way to distinguish a mature cohort from an early estimate.
Do not mix duration definitions. If annual margin is measured for active paying accounts, relationship length should describe the same paying-account population. If annual margin includes expansion from multiple seats, years should describe the account relationship rather than one initial seat. If you use one year of margin from a mature cohort and years from a different acquisition channel, the multiplication may still run but its interpretation is weak.
Customer acquisition cost, often abbreviated as CAC, is the cost of winning a new customer. It may include advertising, sales compensation, commissions, agency work, promotional credits, onboarding effort, or other costs that are deliberately assigned to acquisition. The simple calculator does not ask for acquisition cost and does not subtract it. Its output is therefore best read as a pre-acquisition-cost contribution-margin total unless you have explicitly built an acquisition charge into the annual margin, which is usually a confusing convention.
Suppose annual contribution margin is 800 and relationship length is 3.5 years. The calculator returns 2,800. If a separately measured acquisition cost is 500 for the same customer unit and cohort, a basic post-acquisition comparison could show 2,300 after subtracting that one-time cost. That subtraction is an external analysis, not a change to the calculator's displayed formula. It is valid only if the 500 uses the same scope, currency, time window, and attribution rule.
Do not subtract variable service costs twice. If annual margin already means revenue less the costs of serving the customer, subtracting those same costs again as CAC would understate the result. Conversely, do not bury advertising or sales acquisition spending inside annual margin if you plan to subtract CAC separately. State whether onboarding is a cost to acquire, a cost to serve, or split by a documented rule.
CAC itself can be an average that hides important differences. A channel with low average acquisition cost may bring customers with lower margin or shorter retention. A channel with high acquisition cost may produce a different customer mix. Compare acquisition cost, annual contribution margin, retention evidence, and measurement period together. A simple CLV number alone should not set a marketing budget, a bid ceiling, a commission plan, or a promise to a customer.
Retention describes how much of a defined customer group remains active after a period. Churn describes customers leaving or becoming inactive under a stated rule. They are related but not interchangeable labels unless the period, denominator, customer state, and treatment of reactivation are the same. A monthly logo-retention figure, a yearly revenue-retention figure, and a cancellation count can tell different stories even when each is called retention or churn.
The simple model does not calculate churn. It replaces the whole retention path with one relationship-length input. That can be reasonable when you have a stable, well-defined average duration and a roughly steady annual margin. It is less informative when many customers leave early, when a smaller group remains for a long time, or when margin changes sharply after onboarding. Two cohorts can have the same average years but very different cash-flow shapes.
Early churn matters because the first year may contain onboarding expense, discounts, or unusually high support effort. A customer who leaves after a few months may never reach the annual margin assumed from mature customers. Conversely, long-lived customers may expand usage, receive loyalty pricing, or require more support. A single average can conceal both effects. If they matter to the decision, model the years separately or use a cohort schedule rather than forcing one duration to carry all of the information.
If you derive relationship length from retention evidence, keep the population consistent. Use the same product, plan, geography, acquisition channel, customer unit, and start-date rules used to measure annual margin. Define whether paused accounts, reactivated accounts, unpaid accounts, and migrations remain in the relationship. Do not combine a mature cohort's margin with a new cohort's incomplete duration and call the product a measured value.
A useful review asks whether the duration is an average, a median, a contractual maximum, or an expected value weighted by survival. Those statistics answer different questions. The calculator can multiply any nonnegative years value, but the visitor must choose the statistic that matches the decision and explain why. A longer duration is not automatically better evidence; it may simply reflect a definition that counts inactive or transferred customers differently.
Money received sooner is usually more useful than the same nominal amount received later because it can be used, saved, or reinvested sooner and because future receipts carry uncertainty. A discounted lifetime-value analysis reflects that timing. This calculator does not. It adds the same annual contribution margin across the selected years as if each unit had equal present value. That is the meaning of undiscounted in this context.
For example, an annual margin of 1,000 over 3 years produces a simple result of 3,000. If the margins arrive at each year-end and a separate analysis uses a 10 percent annual discount rate, the present-value calculation would be about 909.09 for year 1, 826.45 for year 2, and 751.31 for year 3, totaling about 2,486.85. The difference is not an arithmetic error in the simple result. It comes from a different question about timing and required return.
The timing convention matters even before choosing a discount rate. A margin received at the start of a year, spread monthly, or received only after renewal does not have the same present value as a year-end receipt. The simple multiplication does not know invoice dates, payment delays, refunds, failed payments, or the probability that a customer reaches a later year. It is not a net-present-value calculation and should not be described as one.
Discounting also does not solve uncertainty by itself. A rate can reflect time preference, opportunity cost, or risk, but it does not replace a retention model or a careful margin schedule. A richer analysis can estimate each period's expected margin, weight it by the probability that the customer is still active, discount the timing, and treat acquisition cost separately. Use that richer method when the timing of cash flows or the stakes of the decision make the simple undiscounted comparison inadequate.
Keep the distinction visible in reports. Write undiscounted contribution margin beside the result and state the annual-margin and years assumptions. Do not compare an undiscounted simple result for one cohort with a discounted, survival-weighted result for another as if they were the same metric. The labels are part of the calculation.
Suppose one defined customer account produces 1,500 of annual revenue. Variable service costs for that account are 600, including transaction charges and usage-linked fulfillment. Annual contribution margin is therefore 900. If the selected relationship length is 4 years, enter annual margin of 900 and years of 4. The calculator returns 3,600, calculated as 900 x 4.
The same case demonstrates why revenue is not the right input. Multiplying revenue by years would give 6,000. That number describes four years of top-line sales under the assumption of 1,500 each year, not four years of contribution margin. It leaves the 600 annual variable service cost in the result. If the purpose is to estimate what remains to cover fixed costs and profit, the revenue-based number answers the wrong question.
Now separate acquisition cost. If the account was acquired at a measured cost of 700, a separate pre-discount comparison could show 3,600 less 700, or 2,900, before considering fixed costs, timing, taxes, refunds, or changes in behavior. The calculator still returns 3,600 because CAC is not one of its fields. If the 700 includes first-year onboarding that was already deducted from the 900 margin, subtracting it again would double count it.
Finally, test the definition. If 1,500 is gross invoice value before discounts but the 600 is based on collected net sales, the 900 margin is inconsistent. If the 4 years comes from a different plan or acquisition channel, the multiplication is also not a like-for-like result. The arithmetic is easy; the useful work is making sure each input describes the same customer relationship.
Zero years is a valid edge case. If annual contribution margin is 1,200 and relationship length is 0, the result is 0 because 1,200 x 0 equals 0. In this model, zero years means no modeled active relationship duration. It does not mean the business had no acquisition expense, no setup work, no refund exposure, or no unpaid obligation. Those facts are simply outside the product of the two entered values.
Zero annual margin also produces zero. If a customer relationship lasts 5 years but the annual contribution margin entered is 0, the result is 0. That does not prove the customer was unimportant or costless. It says only that the selected contribution-margin definition leaves no modeled contribution for the selected period. If the true margin is negative, the nonnegative input rule means this simple page cannot show the loss faithfully.
Fractional years can represent an average or a prorated scenario. With annual margin of 800 and years of 2.5, the result is 2,000. This can be a useful shorthand for a half-year average across many customers, but it should not be read as proof that exactly 400 arrives in the final half-year. If customers pay monthly or cancel at renewal dates, use the fractional value as an assumption and document how it was derived.
The formula is linear, so changing one input makes the effect easy to inspect. With annual margin of 1,000 and years of 4, the result is 4,000. Raising the duration to 5 adds 1,000. Raising annual margin to 1,100 while keeping 4 years adds 400. A lower margin of 750 and 3 years gives 2,250. These are scenario results, not claims about what customers will actually do.
If the business has a known first-year discount and later price change, do not hide them by choosing a convenient average unless the purpose is explicitly a simple summary. A more detailed model would enter year-specific margins and retention probabilities. The simple page remains useful as a reference point, as long as the average and its limitations are visible.
A customer can mean an individual, a household, a paying account, a company, a location, a contract, a subscription, or an active seat. There is no universal choice. Choose the unit that matches the commercial question and write it beside the inputs. If annual margin is per company account but relationship length is measured per user, the product combines unlike units and can overstate or understate the result.
Cohort consistency is just as important. A cohort may share an acquisition month, product plan, region, channel, contract type, or first-purchase rule. Use annual margin and relationship length from the same cohort when possible. A mature cohort may have a higher annual margin and longer observed tenure than a new cohort. Blending them without labeling the mix can make a changing business look stable.
Be explicit about upgrades, downgrades, cross-sells, household sharing, account transfers, and migrations. If an account expands from one seat to ten, decide whether the customer unit remains the account and whether annual margin includes that expansion. If an individual moves between plans, decide whether the original relationship continues. If one business has several locations, decide whether each location is a customer or whether the parent account is the customer.
The period also needs to match. Annual margin for the last twelve months, relationship length based on a five-year history, and CAC from a single promotional month may be useful in a rough exploration but do not form a clean cohort metric. Align date ranges, currency, product scope, and activity definitions. When alignment is impossible, label the result as a mixed-input scenario and avoid presenting it as measured customer economics.
A short definition note can prevent many errors: customer unit, active-state rule, margin inclusions, cohort dates, currency, and whether the years value is observed or assumed. The note is often more valuable than a long decimal result because it lets another person reproduce the reasoning without guessing what the word customer meant.
A single CLV result can look more certain than the inputs deserve. Sensitivity analysis makes the dependence visible by changing one assumption at a time or by showing a small set of plausible combinations. Because the formula is a multiplication, the output responds directly to both annual margin and years. A range is not a promise about outcomes; it is a way to see which assumptions matter most.
Start with a base case. If annual margin is 1,000 and years is 4, the base result is 4,000. For a duration sensitivity, 3 years gives 3,000 and 5 years gives 5,000. For a margin sensitivity, 750 over 4 years gives 3,000 and 1,250 over 4 years gives 5,000. The same output can come from different combinations, so the number alone cannot identify which operating condition produced it.
A two-way set of scenarios is often more honest than one optimistic case. For example, pair annual margins of 750, 1,000, and 1,250 with durations of 2, 4, and 6 years. The nine products range from 1,500 to 7,500. The range is deliberately broad only if those inputs are plausible for the same customer definition. Do not use arbitrary extremes to manufacture certainty or fear; explain the evidence behind each low, base, and high assumption.
Sensitivity also helps prioritize measurement. If small changes in duration move the result more than small changes in annual margin, retention evidence deserves attention. If usage costs make annual margin unstable, improve the variable-cost calculation. If both vary widely by channel, report channel-specific scenarios instead of one blended average. A sensitivity exercise can reveal a measurement gap without pretending to resolve it.
Keep acquisition cost and discounting visible in the scenario note. An undiscounted pre-CAC range is not directly comparable with a discounted after-CAC range. Use separate labels such as simple undiscounted contribution margin, acquisition cost, and discounted expected value. This keeps sensitivity analysis from becoming a collection of incomparable numbers that look precise only because they share a currency symbol.
The most common mistake is entering revenue instead of contribution margin. The next is entering a margin percentage when the field expects a currency amount. Check the unit before calculating: annual currency per customer, not annual sales percentage. If a percentage is all you have, multiply it by the relevant annual revenue first and verify that the revenue and variable-cost scope match.
Another mistake is mixing customer definitions. A per-seat margin multiplied by account-level years can be wrong when seat counts change. A household retention period should not be paired with an individual purchase margin without a clear rule. Write the customer unit in plain language and ask whether one person reviewing the result would classify the same account the same way.
Do not treat relationship length as a guaranteed contract term when it is an average observed tenure. Do not use an average from active customers only if early cancellations are absent from the sample. Do not turn a high-retention cohort into a general company assumption without checking product, channel, and customer mix. The calculator cannot detect survivor bias, incomplete cohorts, or changes in the business.
Avoid double counting acquisition and service costs. If the annual contribution margin already includes a cost, do not subtract it again. If CAC is calculated across a whole channel, do not apply it to a customer group that the channel did not acquire. Check whether discounts, refunds, taxes, payment fees, onboarding, and support were handled consistently.
Finally, do not add a discount rate mentally and still call the answer simple CLV. Do not call the result a forecast because the product is based on assumed years, and do not call it a valuation because it does not model a company's assets, liabilities, cash flows, or required return. Before sharing the number, state the formula, the two input definitions, the currency, the cohort, and the fact that the result is undiscounted.
The model is useful when transparency and speed matter more than detailed timing. A visitor can enter a defensible annual contribution margin and a clearly defined duration to get a quick scale check. That can help explain why a customer with a modest annual margin may still matter over several years, or why a small change in retention deserves attention. The arithmetic is easy to audit in a meeting or a spreadsheet review.
It can support early scenario comparison. A team may compare a low, base, and high relationship length, compare plans with different annual margins, or check whether a proposed cohort assumption is internally consistent. It can also provide a common starting point before adding acquisition cost, survival weighting, or discounting in a more detailed analysis. The simple result is especially helpful for teaching the difference between sales and contribution economics.
It can be appropriate for a stable, low-complexity relationship where annual margin is reasonably flat, customers are defined consistently, and timing is not the immediate question. It may also be useful for a first-pass educational example, a rough internal discussion, or a directional comparison where every scenario uses the same undiscounted convention.
Usefulness does not mean authority. A simple result should be accompanied by its assumptions and tested against observed performance when the decision becomes material. If the number will affect pricing, staffing, marketing spend, product access, compensation, or a customer treatment policy, use the simple model as a prompt for review rather than the sole approval gate.
The simple formula assumes one annual contribution margin applies across the entire relationship. It does not model an onboarding year, introductory pricing, price increases, expansion, contraction, plan changes, seasonality, refunds, bad debt, or a different cost-to-serve for long-lived customers. If any of those are large, an annual average can obscure the behavior that matters to the decision.
It also uses one relationship-length number instead of a survival schedule. Early churn and late retention can produce the same average years as a smoother customer pattern while creating very different cash timing and risk. Active-customer averages can exclude people who left, and new cohorts may not yet have had enough time to show their full duration. A single field cannot correct those sampling problems.
The calculator does not include acquisition cost, fixed overhead, taxes, financing, working capital, payment timing, discount rate, risk adjustment, or the cost of capital. It does not know whether margin is collected in cash, booked as revenue, or delayed by a customer contract. It cannot determine product-market fit, pricing power, affordability, or the value of a company. It cannot tell you whether a customer is worth pursuing or whether a marketing channel is responsible.
A richer customer analysis can use period-by-period margin, the probability that the customer remains active in each period, actual payment timing, and a declared discount rate. It can subtract acquisition cost once with a matched attribution rule, model separate cohorts, and show uncertainty ranges. A cohort table or retention curve may be more informative than a single average. Those methods require more assumptions, not fewer, so document them and keep the simple benchmark for comparison.
Escalate the method when the result will support a major investment, a transaction, a valuation, a public statement, a compensation formula, or an automated customer decision. Have the relevant finance, analytics, legal, privacy, or operational reviewers check the definitions and consequences. The simple calculator is a bounded arithmetic tool. Its limitations are a reason to add context, not a reason to hide uncertainty behind a precise-looking output.
The arithmetic needs two numbers, not a person's name, email address, account identifier, payment details, or private correspondence. Avoid putting personally identifying information into the fields or into notes used to explain a result. A customer-level margin and tenure can still be sensitive because together they may reveal spending, profitability, business health, or a person's relationship with a service. Prefer anonymized or aggregated cohorts when an individual record is not necessary.
Control who can see the assumptions and the result. A shared screenshot can expose annual margin, retention assumptions, acquisition cost notes, and the customer group even if it contains no name. Share only the minimum needed for the decision, remove identifiers, and keep the currency and period labels so that a stripped-down number is not misunderstood. Treat exported planning material according to the sensitivity of the underlying customer information.
